How to prepare artwork for vinyl cutting
Checklist for artwork that cuts cleanly on a plotter.
Artwork that looks perfect in Illustrator can still fail on a plotter. Preparation is about paths, scale, and weeding — not just “export SVG.”
Vector hygiene
- Expand strokes and compound paths deliberately
- Remove hidden layers and stray points
- Unify overlapping shapes per colour layer
- Check for open paths that should be closed
Scale and units
Set document units to mm or inches. Confirm artboard size matches cut size. Nested transforms and “scale strokes” surprises are a common source of wrong-size cuts.
Weeding and bridges
Tiny islands disappear under the blade. Add bridges to delicate counters when needed, or thicken strokes. Multi-colour jobs need registration marks or clear layer alignment notes — see layered vinyl designs.
Mirror for heat transfer
HTV usually cuts mirrored. Adhesive vinyl usually does not. Label the file and the order so operators do not guess.
Shop-floor handoff
If customers design on your site, capture text, font, finish, and size in the order instead of relying on email attachments. That is the role of vinyl cutting software in a commerce stack.
